Intervarsity Softball
Softball is the perfect sport for colleges, the basic skills are relatively easy to pick up and there is a minimal amount of investment required from students to get started. As it is a mixed sport (minimum of 4 girls on a team of 10 players), it is accessible to all students. Softball in its various forms is the one of the most popular past-times for youths in the United States and this makes softball clubs very appealing to US students on study abroad programmes in Ireland . With this in mind, college softball clubs in Ireland prioritise aiding international students to integrate into the college society. This also leads to the great social aspects of college softball in Ireland .
Starting with humble pick-up games at the turn of the millennium, college softball has developed year on year into what is now a full league offering players of all abilities the chance to experience what is for most a new sport. The colleges play Co-ed slowpitch softball, making the clubs open to all. The league is played over three weekends, the first held in November and the remaining two in March and April. All of the colleges promote participation of all members, for this reason clubs are welcome to bring non-competitive teams to any tournament to cater for those who just want to play for fun.
Currently there are clubs in UCD, University of Limerick , NUI Galway and Queens University Belfast but the league is always eager to expand. If you feel there is enough interest in your college to get a club going, feel free to and we will support you in whatever way we can.
